Submerged - 2020

Submerge forms part of Thalassophobia, a personal exhibition presented by Kristi Marié in 2019 exploring fear and the emotional pull of the ocean.

The sea becomes both subject and metaphor throughout the series, representing a vast and unknowable force that continues to resonate deeply within the artist’s life and work. Drawn to the beauty and mystery of deep water, Kristi reflects on the tension between fascination and fear. The ocean evokes feelings of vulnerability and anxiety, yet it also holds a quiet allure. Through painting these environments, she finds a sense of control and calm within something that once felt overwhelming.

The works explore the idea that distance can bring clarity. By stepping back, one can begin to see a situation more fully. In this sense, the ocean becomes symbolic of personal experiences that can feel both beautiful and terrifying, echoing moments of heartbreak, discovery and transformation.

Painted in oil, the series captures the depth and richness of the deep blue sea from an aerial perspective. Textured rock formations emerge like islands or distant galaxies within the water’s surface, creating expansive compositions that invite the viewer into a contemplative and immersive landscape.

With Submerge, Kristi begins to redefine her visual language, marking an important moment of experimentation and growth in her artistic practice.
