Thalassophobia - 2019

This body of work marks the beginning of Kristi Marié’s painting practice and introduces her fascination with the colour blue and the emotional pull of deep water. Inspired by her fear of dark, open waters, the paintings explore the tension between beauty and unease found within the vast unknown.

Across the canvases, the deep blues suggest an endless abyss, evoking both vulnerability and quiet fascination. The works were created during a deeply emotional chapter in the artist’s life, where the experience of a turbulent relationship mirrored the sensations she associates with swimming in deep water. Feelings of uncertainty, anxiety and vulnerability surface through darkened corners of the compositions, where the unknown seems to linger just beyond sight.

Subtle ripples of light move through the paintings like currents in water, guiding the viewer toward moments of clarity and calm. These passages of light suggest breath, release and the possibility of renewal.

Through the act of painting, Kristi transforms fear into reflection, allowing the works to become both a confrontation with the unknown and a quiet search for balance.
